Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back in Cheshire and emerging as strong contender to be Man United interim head coach – as sources reveal ANOTHER club legend on the shortlist

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is emerging as a strong contender to make an emotional return to Manchester United as interim head coach until the end of the season.

The Norwegian was pictured today at a Waitrose store in Wilmslow, Cheshire, close to the house he owns in the area.

Solskjaer’s success as a temporary replacement for Jose Mourinho in December 2018 led to him landing the job on a permanent basis for almost another three years before he was sacked in November 2021.

After United axed Ruben Amorim on Monday, Daily Mail Sport understands that the 52-year-old Norwegian is high on the shortlist of potential replacements to take over until the end of the season, which is also said to include another former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

United insiders have stressed that there are several other candidates being considered, and there is no outright favourite at this stage. Meanwhile, sources close to Solskjaer were staying tight-lipped on Tuesday.

The Old Trafford legend, adored for a United career that included his unforgettable winning goal to win the Champions League final in Sir Alex Ferguson’s Treble season, knows the club inside out and would have a galvanizing effect on the dressing-room and fanbase if United were to turn to him a second time.

Solskjaer would be unlikely to stay longer this time with United planning on making a permanent appointment in the summer. Indeed, sources have still not ruled out making one now if the right candidate is available, but that appears unlikely.

It’s unclear if the interim manager would work alongside Darren Fletcher, United’s Under-18s boss who has stepped up to a caretaker role following the decision to end Amorim’s turbulent 14-month reign at the club.

Jonny Evans is returning to United to work alongside Fletcher after giving up his role as loans manager after just six months in December, and the Northern Irishman could stay on in the new set-up.

Academy coaches Travis Binnion and Alan Wright will also assist Fletcher when he takes charge of his first game at Burnley on Wednesday night.
