St Mirren’s Jim Gillespie is frontrunner to be Rangers’ next chief executive… 18 months after first being linked with the post

St Mirren vice-chair Jim Gillespie is a leading contender to be Rangers’ chief executive – 18 months after taking himself out of the running for the post.

He spoke at length to the Ibrox hierarchy about the job in August of 2024 after James Bisgrove abruptly left for Saudi Arabia only to stand back.

Rangers’ hierarchy at that time ultimately appointed Patrick Stewart, but the new American owners need to fill the vacancy again after sacking him alongside sporting director Kevin Thelwell in November.

And after a thorough interview process, Gillespie is believed to be firmly in their thoughts.

As well as his ongoing involvement with the Buddies, the 47-year-old has earned a reputation through his work with children’s charity the Kibble, where he’s CEO.

Rangers have turned to former chairman Fraser Thornton to fill the interim CEO role as the hunt for Stewart’s successor has taken place.
