Rangers have made enquiries to Sunderland for duo Dan Neil and Romaine Mundle — and are also keeping tabs on Hibs striker Kieron Bowie.
It comes as the Ibrox club were also closing in last night on a double swoop for Sturm Graz midfielder Tochi Chukwuani and Westerlo left-back Tuur Rommens.
Chukwuani, a Danish Under-21 international, is expected to join for a fee of around £4million, whilst Rommens, who has also played for Belgium at Under-21 level, should join for around £3m.
Now firmly established as serious contenders in this season’s title race, Rangers are keen to back Danny Rohl as much as possible in the January window.
Sunderland midfielder Neil captained his hometown club to play-off success at Wembley in May but has only featured three times in the Premier League this season.
He plays in central midfield and would provide cover for the injured Connor Barron. Neil is also out of contract with Sunderland next summer.

Winger Mundle has featured off the bench of late but is thought to want more game time
Hibs striker Bowie has shown flashes of brilliance this season and would command a large fee
Winger Mundle has made eight substitute appearances from the bench and is keen for more regular football. Sunderland are open to allowing him to leave on loan this month.
When asked about the prospect of Mundle leaving, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris said: ‘If a player won’t play too much in the second part of the season, there is the possibility for him to find another club to get minutes.’
Mundle also has interest from Espanyol and Club Brugge, and Neil from clubs in the Championship.
It is also understood that Rangers are now monitoring the availability of Hibs and Scotland striker Bowie, who is valued at around £6m by the Easter Road club.
It is expected that Rangers could ship at least six players out before the window closes in order to free up funds, with Rohl keen to freshen up the squad and add quality.
Speaking yesterday, the Rangers boss said: ‘Yes, I had some conversations with some players and I think also some players feel at the moment that it’s not easy to come into the squad or be part of a regular squad. And then we have to make clear decisions with them together. This is always important.

‘But also, some players, they want to play — but they also love to be part of our way at the moment. We have to make sure that we have a good squad and a good number of squad that we can help each other.
‘I think we said this before, that we are really looking for the window. But so far, we have taken a lot of points without new signings.
‘I think this is also important because I see how much our players are growing at the moment, how much self-confidence they have, how many things they’re doing right.
‘But you have to be hungry and you have to be ambitious also in the market.’
