Reece James tells Chelsea fans to be patient over Cole Palmer’s injury issues – and addresses Man United transfer speculation

Reece James has called for patience surrounding Cole Palmer, with Chelsea’s captain knowing what it is like coming back from injury issues and insisting his team-mate is absolutely committed to the club.

Palmer’s introduction at half-time versus Napoli helped swing the Champions League clash in his side’s favour, with the 23-year-old twice setting up goals for Joao Pedro to secure a 3-2 win. That saw the Blues qualify automatically for the last 16.

Palmer was only fit enough to play 45 minutes as he is not yet deemed ready for 60-plus following groin and hamstring problems, and it remains to be seen whether Liam Rosenior is willing to risk starting him against West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday or if it is better to save that for Arsenal in their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg on Tuesday.

On Palmer, James said: ‘He’s been in a difficult period. He’s had a few setbacks. It’s been slow for him this season, but we’re super happy to have him.

‘He showed what he can do in the 45 minutes he played. Everyone needs to stay patient with him. He’s an amazing player. He’s still super young. He’s going to improve with time.’

Rosenior spent much of his time in front of the media this week insisting that Palmer was perfectly happy at Chelsea, amid speculation that he would be open to leaving for Manchester United.

James said: ‘Of course he’s committed to Chelsea. He’s a Chelsea player. Many players have speculation in transfer windows. It’s normal for players.

‘He’s conducted himself really well. We’re super happy with him.’

Chelsea are relieved that they won in Naples to avoid adding another two fixtures to their bustling schedule in the form of a two-legged Champions League play-off. That will allow Rosenior more time on the training pitch, which has been limited since he succeeded Enzo Maresca as Blues boss with his side playing two-to-three games a week.

James conquered Europe with Chelsea in 2021, after Thomas Tuchel had replaced Frank Lampard mid-season.

Asked if he senses Chelsea could go all the way in the Champions League again, James said: ‘It’s super early in the competition, but it was a special performance from a special group. Winning here is a super tough place to come and win, especially when they’re leading.

‘When a new manager arrives, it’s always difficult. Different style of play, everyone’s adapting and trying to learn as quick as possible. But the results, they spoke for themselves. It’s still early as well. We’re still learning to get to know him and the style of football he wants to play. But every session, every game, we’re improving.’
