Inside Sam Kerr’s wild wedding to Kristie Mewis as her Matildas teammates share behind-the-scenes photos

Sam Kerr’s Matildas team-mates have paid their congratulations to their captain, after the Australia striker married former West Ham and USA star Kristie Mewis in a stunning ceremony in her hometown of Perth on New Year’s Eve.

Pictures from the wedding have been emerging online over the weekend, with Kerr and Mewis also sharing a few snaps of themselves celebrating their big day on Instagram.

Mewis sparkled during the ceremony, wearing a glittery white corset that came up to her thigh and a pair of white heels. She wore a transparent gown over the top of the corset, which featured slivers of glittery sequined material that ran down the length of the dress.

The former USA international was sharing a kiss with her new wife, Kerr, after the ceremony had concluded, with the Matildas captain wearing a black tuxedo with a white boutonniere.

In another snap, the Aussie superstar was seen picking the former West Ham United midfielder up onto her shoulders, before the pair danced with their guests.

Over 100 people attended the stunning Dionysus Villa in Perth’s Swan Valley for the ceremony, with guests first arriving at the Crown Towers resort in Burswood before being transported 30 minutes north-east to the Venetian manor.

Kerr’s international team-mates had flown in from all around the world to celebrate their skipper’s wedding, with Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord, Emily Van Egmond, Alanna Kennedy, and Mackenzie Arnold all pictured smiling for photos.

The ceremony took place in the front courtyard of the Dionysus Villa, with guests taking a seat to watch the footballing power couple tie the knot on the front lawn.

Kerr walked down the aisle with her seven-month-old son Jagger, with Mewis holding back the tears, having previously predicted that this part of the ceremony ‘was going to be gut-wrenching’ for her.

‘I will sob when that happens,’ Kristie had also told the Mewis Squared podcast in the days preceding the wedding. Jagger had also been wearing a matching tuxedo that matched the same one his mum Kerr was wearing.

The Chelsea striker, who made her long-awaited return to the football pitch after overcoming an ACL injury in September, then gave her son to her dad, Roger, so that she could recite her wedding vows.

Kerr held Mewis’ hands and grinned, before the smitten couple said ‘I do’.

Guests cheered and applauded them as they walked back down the aisle before sharing a kiss.

It was a searing hot day in Perth, with temperatures rising to around 35 degrees. Members of the wedding party were seen ducking for shade, while some of the Matildas stars sheltered from the blistering hot sun under parasols.

The footballers congregated in a group outside the stately Venetian villa, which was sold in 2021 for between $2,785,000 – $3,240,000.

The group were seen clinking glasses together and chatting, before mingling with other members of the party, who all wore black outfits as part of the dress code.

Van Egmond, who wed her partner, Kat Thompson, last year, stunned in a black tuxedo complete with a bow tie.

Catley, Foord and fellow Arsenal star Katie McCabe all dazzled in black gowns. Kennedy and Arnold wore black trousers, with the former wearing a corset with a keyhole cut out in her midriff. Arnold donned a black waistcoat.

The footballers posed for several photographs in front of the Dionysus villa, showcasing the villa’s grand pilasters and arches on its front entrance.

In another snap, the group were seen walking behind their captain, Kerr, down a flight of stairs, with the Australian striker smiling as she spoke with other guests at the villa.

Van Egmond published several pictures of the group on her Instagram account, writing: ‘The best day celebrating Kerr Mewis’.

Catley also published a slideshow of images, before hailing the happy couple: ‘Sam & Kristie,’ she wrote, adding a ‘white love-heart’ emoji.

As the sun began to set on the stunning Swan Valley venue, the party got underway, with Van Egmond seen dancing next to a saxophonist, Tom Greble, on the front lawn of the stately villa.

She and Kennedy also posed for a quick photo next to a set of DJ decks, situated in the front courtyard.

Van Egmond, Arnold and Kennedy also stopped for a picture with Kerr’s dad, Roger, who matched Kerr, wearing a suave three-piece tuxedo that also had a white flower affixed to his lapel.

Ahead of the evening, Mewis changed into a plain white corset and skirt, which again featured a transparent gown that overlaid her skirt.

A long table had been set out in the centre of the courtyard, with multiple smaller round tables placed around it, with guests sitting down for dinner.

Daily Mail has also seen what was on the drinks menu, with guests able to sample a delectable range of cocktails, which included Moscow mules and spicy margaritas.

Fizzy options were also available, including Pol Roger Brut champagne and Felix Idee Fixe.

For wine, Forest Hill Riesling, Shaw and Smith Sauvignon Blanc were all on the menu, with guests also able to sample a range of beers and ales.

After the dinner concluded, the tables were cleared and guests congregated on a chequered dance floor.

Kerr and Van Egmond were then seen dancing while on another member of the wedding party’s shoulders.

Kerr and Mewis had stayed in the Crown Towers top suite for four nights, and on Saturday, were seen jetting back to London with their son Jagger.

They had shared several snaps of the stunning view over the Swan River from the penthouse suite, while thanking Crown for their stay.

The pair arrived at Perth airport with a mountain of luggage on Saturday, with Kerr jetting back to the UK to prepare for Chelsea’s upcoming Women’s Super League clash against Mewis’ former side West Ham on January 11.

Kerr and Mewis met back in 2019. The Chelsea star has previously revealed that Mewis had ‘slid into her DMs’.

They wouldn’t meet in person until a few months later, due to Covid-19 restrictions.

After both appeared for rival teams at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Kerr and Mewis announced their relationship publicly before getting engaged in 2023.

They welcomed their baby boy, Jagger, in May 2025.
