USA World Cup hero Gio Reyna reveals his wife is pregnant after victory over Paraguay: ‘I was waiting for the perfect time’

Gio Reyna scored his first ever World Cup goal in the USA’s stunning win over Paraguay – and then revealed that his wife is pregnant.

The midfielder, who was nearly sent home from the 2022 World Cup due to a perceived lack of effort, capped off America’s 4-1 win at SoFi Stadium on Friday night.

The 23-year-old curled a shot into the net – with the outside of his boot – and celebrated by placing a ball under his jersey and sucking his thumb.

Shortly after, Reyna announced that he and his wife, Chloe, are expecting their first child.

The midfielder discovered the news a couple of months ago and said: ‘I was waiting for the perfect time [to announce it] and this sort of felt like it.’

Chloe is a former college soccer player and the couple tied the knot in New York last July. She played for the Providence Friars.

On Friday night, Reyna came off the bench with less than 10 minutes to play before sealing a brilliant opening night for the US on home soil.

The midfielder, who plays his club football in Germany for Borussia Monchengladbach, insisted that exorcising demons from Qatar 2022 ‘wasn’t on my mind at all.’

Reyna also said that his confidence had not wavered despite enduring a difficult season for his club. ‘That was never really a problem for me,’ he said.

‘For me it’s simple, whatever I can do to help this team, I’m going to do.’

Striker Folarin Balogun scored twice as the United States took early control of Group D with Friday’s impressive victory over Paraguay.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team face Australia in Seattle next week before a showdown with Turkey back in Los Angeles.
